Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic Therapy may be your path to better health and increased function.

Aquatic therapy is a type of Physical Therapy ideal for the treatment of a variety of diagnosis. The buoyancy effect of water helps decrease stress on the joints and soft tissues of the body by decreasing the effect of gravity. This makes pool based strength and stretching programs ideal for the treatment of:

    • Arthritis
    • Knee and Hip replacements
    • Shoulder surgery
    • Back injury
    • Spinal Stenosis

The supportiveness of the water surrounding the body also makes the pool an ideal place to re-train loss of balance due to:
    • Parkinsons disease
    • Stroke
    • Head injury
    • After Lower leg injury or surgery
    • Generalized weakness

The soothing warmth and sensory input of the water make the pool an ideal place to regain strength lost due to the pain of Diagnosis such as:
    • Severe Arthritic conditions
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Neuralgia
    • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
    • Myalgia

Early joint movement is possible in water even if you are experiencing pain. The buoyancy and heat of the water aids mobility and assists with exercise. The property of decreasing impact while promoting movement allows a variety of individuals to benefit from this program.

Different medical diagnosis can benefit from the pool. Fibromyalgia patients enjoy the warmth of the water, the ease of movement due to the buoyancy of the water, and find that they are able to perform strength exercise with much less irritation. As a result, many of Fibromyalgia patients have been able to return to a more active lifestyle. As an added benefit, the increased sense of independence helps decrease the depression of feeling disabled.

People with poor balance have also done well. Because the resistance of the water acts as an all-encompassing support, Therapists are able to test and re-train balance with less fear of falling for the patient. Even those who are not being treated for poor balance reap the benefits, as they sub-consciously strive to maintain balance in a fluid surrounding.

The warmth and buoyancy of the water makes rehabilitation for the arthritic patient, or the post joint replacement or back surgery patient, much more comfortable. After total knee or hip replacement, patients are able to begin walking much more normally and with much less pain.

Chronic pain or joint contracture sufferers also benefit from the warmth of the water and the effects of buoyancy. Aquatic Therapy offers an alternative form of rehabilitation and can be used in conjunction with more traditional outpatient therapies. The pool is an excellent medium to allow patients the opportunity to exercise and gain strength while affording them a comfortable environment where they can re-initiate limb and body movement.

The Pool

The Endless pool provides a comfortable 96°F water temperature, 2 different depths (38 and 52) and adjustable current. These features allow us to provide a tailored Physical Therapy program designed to meet your specific needs and goals in the most comfortable environment possible. The pool has an excellent filtration system which allows us to keep chlorine content to a fraction of that in a normal pool. The pool also has a resistance system unique in the industry. It is possible to generate a current that patients can work against so they can develop strength to a greater degree than is possible in a normal pool setting. The current generated in the pool ranges from none, to fast enough to challenge a College level competitive swimmer. This means any age-group and any fitness level can benefit from therapy in the pool.
